A mission-critical system. A team trusted to train its users.

Lido Flight 4D from Lufthansa Systems is one of the most advanced flight-planning solutions in the aviation industry, helping airline flight dispatchers plan safe, efficient routes in dynamically changing conditions. Every decision made in the system — from fuel optimization to alternate airport selection — directly influences an airline’s operations and safety. Ensuring users can navigate that complexity with confidence is essential.

That responsibility sits with the Training Service team for Lufthansa Systems, an information technology service provider for the aviation industry. The group prepares both internal employees and airline customers to use Lido Flight 4D effectively, supporting flight planners and operational specialists who work under immense time pressure and cognitive load.

As the product evolved and customer expectations grew, it became clear that the team needed a more effective way to deliver the depth of guidance aviation professionals require.

“We needed a system that would take our trainings to a higher level and maximize operational readiness with our product as well as the benefits of using it.” says Katarzyna Slawska, Adobe Learning Manager Admin, Lufthansa Systems.

Adobe Learning Manager became that system — and the catalyst for a new way of working.

Rebuilding the training cockpit.

Learners from Lufthansa Systems fall into two equally important groups: internal employees who are new to the aviation domain, and external airline teams — primarily flight dispatchers and back-office specialists — who rely on Lido Flight 4D in daily operations. Both work under intense cognitive load, so the learning environment must support them, not distract them.

“The platform shouldn’t add effort — it should make the learning experience smoother and more seamless,” says Slawska. “Adobe Learning Manager fully supports us in reaching our goal to provide top-quality, highly effective trainings.”

Foundational courses like the Aeronautical Foundation Course and Introduction to Lido Flight 4D became fully self-paced, giving new employees the space to absorb complex concepts without waiting for a classroom session. More advanced courses adopted a blended model, where learners complete most of the material independently, then meet with trainers for deeper coaching and scenario work.

The digital environment allows for richer interactivity. Learners practice responding to rapidly changing weather, navigating restricted airspaces, or working through unexpected operational events using simulations and branching scenarios such as modifying a flight plan by changing the alternate airport, or finding the quickest path to a specific system functionality.

These changes also shifted the role of trainers. They now spend more time on meaningful coaching and personalized guidance.

Gaining altitude with reclaimed capacity.

Digitizing the Aeronautical Foundation Course triggered one of the most significant operational efficiencies in the division’s history. The course — once a seven-day classroom session repeated constantly — could finally reach more learners without increasing trainer workload.

As a result, trainers saved between 80 to 125 workdays a year. With that time back, the Training Service team could better cover customer demand for training, contributing to improved customer satisfaction and value realization. They deepened their expertise, investing nearly 50 days in developing new skills; supported training production work as subject matter experts with another 37 days of effort; and delivered revenue-generating customer training.

Administrative burdens also decreased. Before, trainers had to manually track new hires, confirm prerequisites, and enroll each person into required courses. Now enrollment happens automatically, saving up to five days a year; final quiz results are stored in one place for audits; and internal onboarding moves forward without the manual coordination the team once carried on their own.

Training that takes off anywhere in the world.

Aviation training follows its own rhythm. Airlines avoid scheduling learning during peak seasons such as summer and winter, when every dispatcher is needed on the operations floor. Without digital support, that rhythm created capacity bottlenecks.

Now, self-paced content can be delivered in any region at any time, giving airlines the flexibility they need. Trainer presence for certain modules dropped from five days to two, saving more than 40 additional days in one year alone, along with significant travel time and accommodation costs.

With the development of additional blended courses for Lido Flight 4D modules, the Training Service is continuously increasing its flexibility to cover more trainings with the same team of trainers.

Keeping teams connected between takeoff and landing.

As digital learning expanded, the team began integrating the platform’s Social Board feature into blended courses. What started as a support channel soon became a vibrant learning space. Learners asked questions, exchanged insights, and even helped each other work through challenges before a trainer stepped in.

“Being part of the Adobe Learning Manager user community lets us exchange experiences and gain new perspectives. We saw people jumping in to support each other within minutes,” says Slawska. “That kind of peer-to-peer help gives learners confidence that they’re not alone, and Adobe gives us a structured way to make it part of the journey.”

During live operational checkout sessions, trainers watch learners as they demonstrate their readiness to use Lido Flight 4D. Trainers use the platform’s checklist functionality to document each step of the evaluation. The feature wasn’t originally designed for this use, but Klos’ team adapted it creatively. The result is a consistent, transparent way to verify readiness, which is an important safeguard for a mission-critical environment.

Over a four-year period, the Training Service team delivered 222 courses to 61 airlines and facilitated 18 open-call sessions. They have since embedded the learning platform into their processes and now use it more effectively for the benefit of both Lufthansa Systems and its customers.

The Training Service follows ITIL 4 practices, and Adobe Learning Manager plays a key role in that framework. It supports ITIL 4’s “Partners and Suppliers” dimension and enables the team to apply the guiding principle of optimize and automate. The platform is also essential to the ITIL 4 Service Value Chain activity Deliver and Support, strengthening the Training Service’s ability to facilitate value realization for customers.

A clear runway.

Lido Flight 4D continues to evolve, and so does the training behind it. The Training Service team is refining blended programs, expanding scenario-based content, and exploring new opportunities to strengthen social learning. Lufthansa Systems continues to rely on Adobe Learning Manager as a stable, intuitive environment that supports learners, enables trainers, and keeps pace with aviation’s constant change.

The work remains both meaningful and deeply motivating. Preparing the people who guide aircraft safely across the sky gives the team a clear sense of purpose and responsibility.

“Our trainings strengthen the impact of the Lido Flight 4D solution, bringing more value to customers. Adobe Learning Manager plays a key role by providing a dependable platform that supports our requirements,” notes Slawska.
