So, even if we have some amazing applications, I think we've all come across content that clearly has had no human involved in it. People expect it, but I think it's when we try to not be authentic and to operate in a way where we're using AI in place of people, rather than a tool in our kit bag.”
Having a clear view into AI's workings is crucial for maintaining quality and managing risks. Frances emphasises that, without proper human oversight, mistakes can escalate rapidly and become costly. She shares an example of an AI-driven vending machine system that, due to its unsupervised decision-making, drastically reduced profits:
“That human touchpoint is critical. I was reading this study the other day, and they had started using AI for a vending machine company in the US. So, the machine was supposed to be monitoring the stock, seeing what was being sold most frequently, and then ordering based on that.
And the profit went down by about 50% when they had AI doing it. They didn't have those human checks in place to make sure it was correct — and it hadn't got all the answers.”
Furthermore, the power to explain an AI model's specific results provides significant advantages. It strengthens your ability to comply with rules, builds internal confidence in systems and processes, and paves the way for rapid enhancements.
“Organisations being able to answer why a model produced a certain outcome helps to build trust with consumers. It also strengthens the regulatory compliance. Having those human feedback loops then help to identify errors or bias and improve the model quality at scale."
Consent also remains central. Much like how GDPR completely changed how we handle data, businesses must now apply that same level of strictness and care to how they use AI.

“It’s boring, but it’s really important — governance processes, documentation, data tracking, and auditing. The risk for companies if they get this wrong, and there is poor data governance, is huge. A lot of companies still view AI data governance as an extension of their existing data management, whereas actually... the way that the data really needs to be governed requires a totally new set of controls. You need to think about data traceability and continually monitor drift and bias in the deployed systems as well."
These demands become even more pressing in highly regulated fields, where a wrong answer from AI can have catastrophic consequences. But, with excellent data management, you get a triple win: better AI performance, fewer ethical headaches, and reliable AI results, even when you're using it across your entire organisation.

She also foresees a future where more formal structures will emerge, such as dedicated AI councils or central offices specifically managing AI projects to ensure proper oversight.
"The accountability will sit more with specific roles than with specific teams in companies." She continues, "it's probably impossible to be successful and successfully scale” without it.
"Absolutely AI should empower human decision making. But I don't think it's just organisations. I think it's the media, it's the government, I think that there's a lot that needs to happen to shift that narrative away from fearmongering. Education is a huge part of it as well."
