What modern cars and signature workflows have in common

Knight Rider-style car partners? Voice assistants and autonomous driving have practically brought the dream of every 1980s film fan to life. Cars today already have seamlessly interlinked software systems that ensure safety and comfort in equal measures. Naturally, their manufacturer also relies on smooth, secure processes.

As a global provider of flexible, innovative software solutions for vehicle infrastructure, connectivity, safety, and autonomous driving, Elektrobit uses Adobe Acrobat Sign for electronic signatures. The company, headquartered in Erlangen, Germany, digitalized the signature workflows of its purchasing and legal departments as a concrete step towards modern working.

Electronic signatures for smooth switching

Hybrid and remote working have long been common fare for Continental subsidiary Elektrobit. “Our software is integrated into around 100 million vehicles worldwide. Leading car manufacturers rely on our solutions to ensure safety, for example on the road with proximity sensors, as well as cybersecurity,” explains Benedikt Degering, Senior Strategic Buyer for Elektrobit. Of course, leading software solutions also require seamless digital (signature) workflows to support them. Whether it’s EVAL agreements for the assessment of potential new suppliers, letters of intent, or NDAs ― signatures are an essential component of smooth business processes.

Printing, signing, and scanning documents can take up a lot of time in a workflow. If signatories are working from home or other locations rather than in the same building, these processes could take several days. “Our employees now have a hybrid work environment where they have the opportunity to work from home for a major part of their time. Because of this, it was clear to us that we needed to establish an official, unified solution for internal and external signature processes,” says Degering.

Seamless digital workflows are essential for a modern working environment

After a small-scale test phase, Elektrobit introduced electronic signatures in Autumn 2020 in their key hubs of the purchasing and legal departments. Doing this allowed testers to familiarize themselves with Adobe Acrobat Sign and work with Adobe to adapt the signature solution for the company’s individual needs. “To start with, there was the usual familiarization phase that comes with the introduction of any new software,” Degering recalls. “We were able to flag some small issues and work with Adobe to adapt the software to our specific needs”

For Degering, introducing electronic signatures is an important investment in the future. “I can see electronic signatures becoming more and more common in business,” he explains. “Remote work has come to stay. The structures that come with it, such as tools for digital collaborative work — including electronic signatures — are part of a modern company.”
