Steph Ballard is a Director of Responsible AI Practice in Microsoft's Office of Responsible AI, where she translates AI regulation into scalable internal policy to support first-party engineering compliance. She is currently focused on frontier AI safety, supporting the implementation of Microsoft's Frontier Governance Framework through emerging risk identification, threat modeling, and the creation of red-teaming, evaluation, and mitigation approaches. She has led workstreams on the EU AI Act's prohibited practices, high-risk systems, and both product and governance transparency. She frequently advises product and central infrastructure teams on implementation and compliance. Before joining Microsoft, she earned her PhD from the University of Washington Information School and was a member of the Tech Policy Lab and Value Sensitive Design Lab.
